Effective January 1st, 2024
Untonne provides its customers the opportunity to make a positive ecological impact on the planet by purchasing carbon offsets or funding projects with the potential to reduce future emissions.
The purpose of this document is to clarify the obligations of the customer and Untonne, LLC with respect to enrolling in an Untonne product.
Carbon Reduction Projects
When you enroll in an Untonne product through its website Untonne.com or with an Untonne representative you fund projects that reduce emissions.
Untonne seeks to drive the implementation of carbon reduction projects that not only result in fewer CO2e emissions but also yield significant humanitarian and ecological co-benefits, such as helping to alleviate extreme poverty and reducing harmful indoor air pollution, while keeping native forest ecosystems intact.
Untonne strives to meet or beat the estimated carbon savings associated with each member’s plan. Carbon reductions include carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) reduction or removal. Estimated carbon reductions are calculated in units of carbon offsets, where one carbon offset is equal to one metric ton (or tonne) of emissions reduction or removal. There are a variety of project types that can accomplish the objective or CO2e reduction or removal; Untonne focuses primarily on clean cooking projects in developing countries at this time.
Enrollment Agreement
When you enroll in an Untonne product you agree to pay a monthly fee and in return, Untonne agrees to fund projects that have the potential to yield emission reductions equal to your agreement. This is the fundamental agreement between the customer and Untonne. This agreement shall continue until such time as either party terminates the agreement as outlined in the cancellation policy, or until Untonne updates this agreement as outlined under the Agreement, Price & Product Changes section of these Terms and Conditions.
Carbon Offset Measurement
The methodology for measuring carbon reductions and resulting carbon offset production will be specific to the project. Untonne strives to follow best practices to ensure real emission reduction is happening. Because clean cookstove projects are often implemented by small developers, third-party verification and third-party certification under a globally recognized brand such as Verra or Gold Standard is often financially infeasible. As a result, Untonne carbon reductions may come from either small, uncertified projects or larger third-party certified projects. In either case, Untonne seeks product partners that demonstrate sufficient evidence of carbon reduction through a combination of lab testing, field testing, and other verification protocols.
Time Horizon
Over the course of any calendar year for which you are enrolled, Untonne will make commitments to either a) purchase and retire carbon offsets from existing projects equal to your subscription amount, or b) invest in the development of projects with the potential to reduce emissions equal to your purchase amount in the future. For example, under scenario a), if you signed up for a plan to offset 20 metric tonnes of emissions annually, Untonne may choose to buy carbon offsets from projects that have already reduced emissions equal to your plan amount. These projects assume future carbon funding to make them viable. Under scenario b), Untonne will invest in projects that have the potential to reduce emissions equal to your subscription amount over the life of the project. This methodology funds new projects, and estimates of carbon emissions savings will in most cases be for the first five years of the project. In both cases, Untonne will seek to work with the project developer to verify use and realized benefits of the project, including but not limited to carbon reduction. These purchases and investments will occur throughout the year, and no later than December 31st of the year following your purchases made in the previous calendar year.
Billing and Payment
Your subscription charge will be collected on a monthly basis through the payment method you provided upon enrollment. You will receive an electronic receipt sent to the email you used to enroll for your first month’s participation.
